Hand Coordination Workout #2
Before you dive into this set of exercises, start with part one which introduces the patterns we’ll be working on here.
The idea is pretty straight forward. We’re taking the “1 e +, 2 e +” pattern from part one (resting on the “a”) and moving it around the kit.
In exercise 1, both hands loop the “1 e +” pattern on separate drums — the right hand plays “low, low, low, rest” whilst the left hand plays “snare, snare, snare, rest”.
In 2-5 we get a little more adventurous. One hand stays put for the whole exercise while the other moves between the drums and cymbals. In 6 things get a little crazy and we move both hands at the same time.
As you’ll see on the worksheet, I’ve written which hand plays which drum or cymbal underneath each exercise. I’ve also used a slashed note head for notes played by the right hand, which should make things a little easier to read. If you’re new to reading drum notation check out the drum notation key.
Once you are comfortable playing 1-6, try to come up with your variations. These exercises are just a starting point! If you have a different set up on your kit, no middle tom for example, you can adapt the exercises to suit your set up.
As always, I recommend practicing with a metronome. Start at a slow tempo before gradually increasing the speed.
